Before they collect it
Agree the figure and whether towing is included before anyone is dispatched. Take the plates off and keep them. Photograph the odometer and the paperwork before it leaves. Rules on releasing liability differ by state, so check your own DMV rather than taking the buyer's word for what you need to file.
